Magnetic bracelets have been around for a long time (1000’s of years) and some people swear by them. They are supposed to help relieve arthritis pain and other aches and pains but the question is do they work?
It all depends on who you ask. For those people that use them and find relief than their answer would be yes.
For those people that use them and find they do not work than the answer would be NO.
If you ask your doctor they may tell you to try it but like all alternative medical methods there is no real hard science backing up whether they work or not.
How Magnetic Bracelets Are Suppose To Work To Relieve Pain
The theory of how magnetic bracelets work has evolved over the years. A thousand or so years ago when magnetic lodestone was used to treat disease it was thought that the magnetic lodestone would “pull” the disease out of one’s body.
Today the theory is more of improving blood flow because blood contains iron. Improved blood flow reduces inflammation which in turn reduces pain. There is also some alternative medicine gurus that offer up the theory that magnetic bracelets alter the electromagnetic field of the human body and “right” the field.
Unfortunately there has been no medical proof that the human body contains and electromagnetic field. There has been no physicist that has been able to prove that the human body has an electromagnetic field either.
The Mystery of it All
At the end of the day there are a lot of things that “work” for people that have no actual scientific basis. If a magnetic bracelet works for you than that is really all that matters.
The placebo effect is a very powerful effect and if you can tap into that part of your brain that helps you to feel well and you can do it by wearing a magnetic bracelet than it is something that you might want to try.
When people hear that there may be a placebo effect by wearing these types of bracelets they shy away from it because it sounds like a negative but maybe there is more to it than simply thinking you are feeling better.
The magnets that are used in the bracelet may “activate” a part of the brain that is not normally utilized. It is in fact a mystery as to why magnetic bracelets work for some people but if you are lucky enough to be one of the people it works for why not?
